DANIEL H. MARKSTEIN, III - is a shareholder in the law firm of Maynard, Cooper & Gale P.C., which has offices in Birmingham, Montgomery, Huntsville and Mobile, Alabama. He was awarded the A.B. degree by Washington & Lee University, the LL.B. by the University of Alabama, and the LL.M. by Harvard University. He was commissioned in the U.S. Army (Armor) and served to the rank of captain with the U. S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam, where he was decorated with the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
His principal areas of practice are federal and state taxation and estate and business planning. He has handled federal, state, and local controversies at the administrative level and in state and federal trial and appellate courts. Mr. Markstein is a Regent, Fellow and Past President of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, a Trustee of the American Institute on Federal Taxation, and a member of various committees of the American Bar Association Sections of Taxation and Real Property, Probate and Trust law. He served on the Alabama Law Institute Committee on the Principal and Income Act. He is a former member of the board of directors of the University of Alabama Federal Tax Clinic, a former member of the board of directors (and its executive committee) of Lex Mundi Ltd., and the former president of the Estate Planning Council of Birmingham.
He has authored articles for various publications and has lectured frequently at continuing legal education seminars throughout the nation. Mr. Markstein has been listed in the Best Lawyers in America (corporate law, tax law, trusts and estates) every year since its inception.
